Pumpkin Spice Lattes get a lot of love in the fall, but they are far from the only festive spiced drink to enjoy. Chai lattes are a delicious drink of Indian origin, comprised of black tea, milk, and a few festive spices. This Maple Chai Latte recipe makes homemade chai tea using black tea, cinnamon sticks, ginger, and cloves, among other spices. However, if you want to take a shortcut and use chai tea bags, it will still be delicious! Using maple syrup as the sweetener adds a nutty, autumnal flair to the tea. Make sure to let the tea fully steep before straining, to ensure it is pretty strong. This way, the latte maintains its flavor when mixed with the frothed milk. So go ahead and brew some tea, froth some milk, and curl up with a mug of the season’s finest flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 1-inch cube fresh ginger
  • ½ teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • 3 pods green cardamom
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 3 bags black tea
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 8 oz. milk of your choice

Instructions

  • Place the cinnamon sticks in a plastic bag or under a dish towel and, using a mallet or heavy pan, crush the sticks into large pieces. Dice the ginger.
  • In a saucepan, warm the cinnamon, ginger, peppercorns, cardamom pods, cloves, over medium-low heat until fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups water to the spices and bring the heat to medium-high. Bring to a simmer.
  • Simmer, covered, for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the tea black bags, and steep for 10 minutes.
  • Swirl the maple syrup into the tea. Using a milk frother, froth and warm the milk. If you don't have a milk frother, you can use a whisk while warming the milk in a saucepan, or warm the milk in the microwave then shake in a jar to froth. Warm the milk until just steaming.
  • Strain the tea and add 6 ounces to a mug. Top with 4 ounces of frothed milk, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a drizzle of additional maple syrup.
  • Repeat for the other latte. Serve.
