In the heat of August, there are few beverages more refreshing than a good homemade lemonade. The sweet, slightly sour essence of lemons perfectly cuts through a hot summer day. But what about a warm summer evening? This Honey Lavender Gin Sour hits all the notes of classic lemonade, with the added aroma of lavender and nutty sweetness of honey. I used Empress 1908 gin to achieve that gorgeous purple color, since this gin is steeped with butterfly pea flowers. However, this will taste just as good with whatever your favorite gin is. The included recipe for honey lavender simple syrup makes about one cup of syrup, so you’ll have plenty left over for mixing and matching into more drinks. Lastly, I used rosemary bitters to complement the floral notes of the gin, but any bitters will do. Shake up this drink, sit down outside, and relax with a slow summer sunset.
This is also a great drink to make if you or your guests aren’t huge fans of gin. The herbaceous and floral notes can be overpowering for some people, but the lemon and honey in this recipe mellow those notes into a subtle background flavor. This drink tastes more like a kicked-up lemonade than a true cocktail, and that’s what makes it so great for summer. Plus, the lavender scent melts right into the gin, creating a smoother, more balanced floral profile.
